One of the best decisions…

After traveling to a few European countries, I began to notice how the people in these countries saw bicycles as a utility; not just a recreation or a workout. In heavily populated cities, bicycles become more economical and provide a simpler way of living. So in light of the “European way” (and in preparation of West African living), I decide to sell my car and turn the bicycle I used as a 10-year-old, in to an e-bike.

As one of the best decisions I’ve made in the last 9 months, I have become healthier, lighter, happier, more aware, and I’ve saved money!

After paying off my car loan and credit cards, I was able to put the money I would have spent on my car, in to something more useful (like tents, sandals, hot sauce, and second-hand camera equipment).

When you’re riding your bike, you’re in the city; not isolated, focused on the destination. You’re more in touch, present, and aware of the sounds, smells and sights around you. Not only is it a means to get to work or go grocery shopping, it becomes something you look forward to. When you wake up in the morning, when you’re finishing up at work, (or when you’re in the middle of a bad date), it becomes a way to get away…

While the positives greatly outweigh the negatives, there are certainly some naughty bits: You will wreck. You will be cold(or hot). People will yell at you. etc. 

And, you get very creative when it comes to carrying things home…

With the idea of renting a car and Uber-ing on rare occasion, I was convinced that I wouldn’t need anything or anyone else to get around. Instead, I met a lot of people, made a lot of friends, and I was offered more help than I ever needed by everyone around me. By the end of my time in the United States, I hardly needed the people from Uber or Enterprise. Instead, I discovered the kindness and willingness to help from all the people in my life. I will miss the time on my bike so much that I had to take it around the block one last time before leaving for the airport at 5 am…

In 2018, I was projected to spend over $4,900 on driving my 2010 Toyota Camry. Instead, I bought a motorized bike wheel ($220) and a 48V battery ($420) to turn a 17-year-old bicycle, in to a 30mph greenway-legal electric vehicle. I couldn’t have done it alone; with the help of some local bike shops, hardware stores, and the owner of Aosom Wheels (after a debilitating accident), it all became possible.
